Artist's Note: The image above does not reflect the impact, depth, and interest this painting has. Internet images just simply can't do it justice.
Until a reasonable representation of this painting can be posted, the following explanation, alternative exposure and detail views are offered.
I sometimes use the darkest shades of color to suggest the outline of shapes. In this painting, darker shades were used to achieve the same result along the subject's chest, the underside of his arms, and the fingers behind the forefinger and thumb. These darker shades don't translate well in photographs, (as in the above image); and direct digital scans result in reflections off the paint, revealing more canvas texture than would ever be seen in appropriate room lighting.
Occasionally, as in the painting above, I also use thicker applications of paint to add three-dimensional interest, letting reflections off the edges of these smaller areas, (or broader background areas), suggest more than what's apparent at first sight. His chest, while in darkness, is made to 'stand out' and brought up off the background using this technique. Thicker, broader brush-strokes of paint were also used to suggest movement behind the subject, perhaps of wings or the direction of flight.
For maximum effect, this painting will require good, overhead lighting.

"While commonly understood within religious contexts, 'Resurrection' here means quite the human and secular experience of regaining a clarity of thought and sureness of purpose - the 'rising up out of confusion and despair' that often, (but not always), follows extreme hardship, and is sometimes the product of the anger of betrayal."
