The original sketch, (not being auctioned), was done in preparation for the Exigency painting, "The Telling." I remember quite well doing the sketch, thinking at the time, "Anyone ever caught in a conversation where he's had to say, 'Can't you see?! Don't you understand?!' will be able to relate." Sketch-work is a means of refining both subject and composition before beginning a final painting. And so it was with this… While the finished sketch holds up to good composition, after doing it, I decided I wanted more contrast between the hands and everything behind them in the final painting. This reproduction, then, is quite different from the final painting, and almost tells a different story. Anyone involved in drama or psychology or looking to collect the entire limited-edition Exigency series of sketch reproductions will appreciate this print.
* Note that the cream color of the paper on which this reproduction was printed shows as white in the image at the left.
