"The rich black soil of the Cedar Valley is the first to lose its snow whenever winter temperatures rise above freezing. Furrows plowed the previous fall are the first to emerge. Whatever remains of snowdrifts in roadside ditches, are the last to disappear in Spring. "Toward evening, after the sun sets, or as in the painting above, when a high, thin, atmospheric cloud-covering filters the sunlight from the landscape, only the starkest contrasts are left behind - all of which can be quite beautiful."
